Purpose

  • Develops and implements mine operating systems, standards, templates and procedures in accordance with Newmont Africa underground mining operations.
  • Develops and implements long range plans and innovative approaches to the effective extraction of the Underground Resources.
  • Works with geology for resource reporting and reports on mining reserve updates.
  • Works with Geotechnical and Ventilation Engineers to develop and implement coordinated designs.
  • Tracks KPI performance, and provides schedules and forecasts for budgets.
  • Training and development of national mine planning team.
  • Seeks and coordinates site best practices and continuous improvement as well as optimize the value of mineral resources.

Essential Duties

General Duties:

  • Develops, implement, monitor and control:
    • Long Term Mine plan
    • Medium Term Mining plan
    • Short term mine scheduling
    • Progress to plan and mitigation strategy
    • Continuous improvement practices
  • Create conceptual stope shapes and development designs including all potential infrastructures – Escape ways, Return Airways, etc. for the Medium Term Planner.
  • Trains and develops mine planning team, develops succession plan, nationalization and monitors performance and accountability of direct reports.
  • Coordinates with Geology regarding exploration efforts by linking drilling with life-of-mine optimized plans.
  • Complete conceptual designs and run financial analysis on all new near mine Geological Models and any potential ore body extensions.
  • Write all required AFE’s for current Life of Mine expenditure and new approved projects that come into the pipeline along with any other stage gate report writing requirements.

 

Safety and Environment:

  • Participate and contribute to safe practice and environmental awareness.
  • Actively participate in all Newmont Ghana safety and environmental systems and initiatives.
  • Demonstrate personal commitment in regard to safety and environmental practices.
  • Identification of potential hazards and action that is appropriately taken.
  • Maintenance of a high standard of efficiency, safety and effectiveness.
  • Raising, discussion and resolution of safety issues at regular meetings.

 

Become familiar with and strictly adhere to Newmont’s Health, Safety and Environmental standards. Act as a role model in complying with and supporting these standards and practices.

Training & Experience

Knowledge: 

  • A University or College degree in Mining Engineering or related field or equivalent operations experience.

 

Experience: 

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in underground mining. This experience should include development and training of an engineering team and practical experience as an underground operations supervisor, miner, and engineer.
  • Experience with deswikCAD and Xeras mine planning cost estimate and schedule optimizer software.
  • Experience with Pitram reporting systems.
  • Experience with design and implementing planning systems and engineering team for rapid mechanized underground mine development and semi-automated LHOS production.

 

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to obtain Ghanaian Statutory Certifications.
  • Demonstrated setting up and implementation of mine planning systems.
  • Management and/or production roles in large scale mechanized LHOS underground mines.
  • Demonstrated contractor management skills.

 

Working Conditions

  • Potential for hazardous conditions exists in underground mines and the incumbent must be familiar with them.
  • Potential for adverse environmental conditions exists in some locations.
